That file is entirely too complicated to dig through, but I can say that there is nothing instrinsically bad about negative curve parameters. Curve parameters are not synonymous with length metrics. The curve domain may be any non-zero-length interval, it doesn't have to start at zero, it doesn't have to end at one, and it doesn't need to have anything to do with the length.

Thanks for getting back! I understand what you are saying about the t values now. And I can see why the negative values occur. I think the problem I am having might relate to the evaluate curve component and how it responds to the negative values once i have shifted them.
I am trying to create a diagonal grid of lines around these curves by adding a number to the t parameter of the points on the curves.
I have re posted the relevant part of the definition. Sorry for posting all of it before but this time all I have attached is the relevant bit:
The lines that come out of the evaluate curve parameter are very close to what I am after.
