develop a double curvature surfaces according to the type of cutting

hi. i'm finding a method to develop a double curvature surfaces according to the type of cutting.

Explaining better I'm analyzing surface not developable , with double curvature . Developing these surfaces on a plane , they involve a considerable increase in area . This problem can be limited by practicing appropriate cuts on the surface , which allow you to improve the approximation to the plan.

A practical example is that of the development of the sphere : if the surface of the sphere is divided into segments , following the trend of meridians , the individual sections will be more easily developed with a reduced area increase .

Moreover changing the type of cut , I will have various developments of the surface .
My goal is to optimize the cutting types and find the best one that develops any free-form surface.

Is there an algorithm or a command that can help me in this ?
