Cutting spheres into surface, pattern

Is there a more efficient way of doing this? I'm using an image sampler to plot spheres on a surface then using those spheres to cut into the surface. However, it's running extremely slowly. Is there a better way to do this? Would like to achieve a similar look to the attached image. Thanks in advance!
