Create new layer for items in a list

Hi all,

I have an assignment for which i am trying to cut my teeth on Python scripting.

I have approx 2000 surfaces in rhino which i am trying to automate creation of a new layer for each surface.

My desire is select all of the surfaces (which are currently on a single layer) and then have the script go through the items and create a new layer for the first surface, put in on that layer, then move onto the next surface, and repeat the process for all items.

Could anyone help me get started?  Any and all imput would be greatly appreciated!
