What would be the most effective way to physically model a cylindrical spiral tube out of chipboard, paper, thin acetate, etc.?

You could create strips of paper that would roll up onto tapered cylinders, then attach them at linearly increasing angles. You'd get a flat approximation of the actual tube of course, so depending on your desired surface quality, this may not be a feasible solution.
