Colored panels from gradient

Hi,

I'm trying to create solid color pieces from a gradient. In the attached file you'll see a gradient running from black to white across a surface. What I want to do is break the surface apart into smaller pieces based on the star pattern geometry shown and fill each piece of new geometry with a solid color either black, grey or white depending where the new geometry is relative to the old gradient.
