Circle packing on non-planar surfaces

Hi, 

How is the concept of circle packing defined for non-planar surface ?

Given a 3d brep, how is one to arrive at a circle packing solution for the whole surface ?

My solution: 

Use meshmachine or something similar to arrive at a mesh of the region, then convert mesh to surface, then perform circle-packing using Kangaroo on this surface. 

Is there any other way to arrive at a circle-pack for non 2d surface ?
