Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Can grasshopper run as an indipendant process not the same ID as Rhino?

I am not sure if this is possible but it really seems odd to me that
grasshopper runs as the same process as rhino. It would be great if one
could kill only grasshopper and leave rhino running. just a thought

thanks

Even if Grasshopper would run in a different thread as Rhino, you still couln't kill Grasshopper from the Task manager. Any Rhino plug-in is necessarily part of the same process. If Grasshopper wasn't running as a Rhino plugin I would't be able to use the Rhino geometry kernel, which means the whole project derails.

If you want to be able to stop Grasshopper mid-process, there are easier ways (not easy, but easier) to accomplish this. Do you want to kill Grasshopper because a solution is taking too long to complete?

I was looking at the diagram in the scripting 101 tutorial and thought it might be difficult to separate them. Usually I want to kill grasshopper because it is taking too long, mostly my clunky defs, or I have plugged in the wrong component by mistake and the ram usage goes nuts.
So it would in fact probably be much better if Grasshopper detected the RAM-insanity itself and offered a bailout option if the usage goes beyond -say- 1GB per solution? And idem dito with solution running time of course.

that would work. Initially I thought more ram was the key, so I switched to wip5 and win 7 but quickly learned that I just need to save often and kill rhino at times.
