Branch index for one item, any tricks?

Is there any way to associate one item in a list (so not really a list) to a branch number?

I intend to merge some data, and normally everything is OK when lists of data contain more than one item. But sometimes these lists only have one item. In this case the merge doesn't go as planned since that one item lost its branch info.
