Also noticed the groundplane itself is disappearing as well, when hiding the box. Maybe rather a Rhino thing?

is there any geometry in the rhino file? I've had consistent trouble with GH preview when the Rhino file itself contains no geometry.

In the first place there was no RhinoGeometry. In the file I posted I just added a box to show there is a difference in display, if you hide or delete it.
