Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello to everyone,

I installed DIVA 2.0 for Rhino 4 and the relative Grasshopper plug-in: i'm running a thermal analysis with the Viper component but the results in the analysis outputs are always "Null", like it even didn't start!

I tried also to run the .idf file of my project with the EP-Launch.exe application but gave me as result: "fatal error", in both cases i used a "Athens-GR" weather file but also with a Us default one isn't working.

I really tried everything: i hope you can tell me something more as i'm lost and i love this plug-in!

Thanks in advance,

Stefano//

Hi Stefano,

The folks at EnergyPlus recently changed the format of their design-day (DDY) files for version 7.1.  (DIVA still uses 7.0.)  Assuming you downloaded the Athens weather files fairly recently, that would explain the errors.  We have a workaround for the upcoming release that involves a change to the HVAC template, but, in the meantime, the easiest fix is to copy and rename an old-format DDY file for a similar climate.  (I have lots of old files, but, alas, all from the U.S.)  I've taken the liberty of creating and attaching a 'fake' Athens DDY file based on Sacramento, California, which has similar weather.  Don't worry, the DDY file is simply to help size the mechanical equipment -- the actual weather data is still in the Athens EPW file.  Overwrite your current Athens DDY file with this one, and you should be good to go.

Best,

Jon

PS.  That little arrow attached to all your components is an update alert... Click on it to download the most recent DIVA.ForGrasshopper assembly!

Thanks a lot for your quick reply Jon!

First of all I updated DIVA the with the new assembly...

Now, with the Sacramento weather file, the EP-Launch.exe is working but i need the data in Grasshopper in real time to accomplish my task!

Is there any way to fix the Grasshopper component wich seems isn't still working?

Thanks again.

Sorry, Stefano -- I missed your first comment about the US weather file not working.  Can you tell me what comes out of Viper's 'messages' when you hit 'Run'?

-Jon

When i hit run appears the 'black window' from energy plus, but just for a second, and then nothing happens!

I send you the Viper message 'output' too, maybe it's helpful...

Hmmm, strange.  The idf runs fine from EPLaunch, but not from Grasshopper?  The message appears to confirm that EnergyPlus is launching, but something must be awry.  After a failed run, can you send me the IDF, as well as the files "C:\DIVA\EnergyPlusV7-0-0\DIVA_for_Grasshopper.bat" and "C:\DIVA\EnergyPlusV7-0-0\DIVA_RunEnergyPlus.bat"?

-Jon

Hello Jon,

I confirm to you that ep-launch is working, not the same for Grasshopper!

I am sending you the files you requested, but I kind solved the problem.

I knew something strange and unreasonable was happening so i just re-wrote the algorithm in a new file and finally worked.

Well it's a compromise i know: maybe it will happen again in future and I red many other people were facing this problem so i think it's better to find a solution!

Cheers,

Stefano//

Stefano,

I have the same problem, How did you solve the problem?

Thanks,

Hi Nick,
Actually I partially solved the problem, because Viper only works when I open a new file, copy and paste my algorithm!
It's a compromise...
Jon Sargent told me that may depend from an authorisation problem because the Ep launch works fine when I run it manually, and seems like it doesn't start for a security issue.
Now I am not in my country with my laptop, you can try what I say: to run E+ manually (EPlaunch.exe inside the program folder on your C drive) and see if it works and then check if you are the admin and run Viper on Gh!
I hope this reply will be helpful, update me!

Regards,
Stefano//

Same problem and I can't solve it ...
