Questions for gridBasedAnalysis, illuminanceAnalysis and Shading for daylighting files

Hi Mostapha,

I am a beginner in Grasshopper and Ladybug and Honeybee that are really nice plugins. Now, I face some problems when I tried these files.

Question 1_For the 004_gridBasedAnalysis (old version):

  • When I run the analysis: it shows: solution exception: expected index value got str
  • Length of the results [=1] is not equal to the number of mesh faces [=72]

What is the source of length of the results?

Question 1_2_For the 004_gridBasedAnalysis (new version):

  • I attached new box by adding new breps, and the floor shows the numbers on the floor.

The result would change when I changed the opening ratio in step 7, but it would not change when lower or higher the opening ratio in step 6. Therefore, I am confused of the work of index for opening ratio in step 6.

Question 2 _For illuminanceAnalysis

I would like to attach customized geometry for window, so I tried this file.

  • The floor brep is unable to be loaded when I open the “ illuminanceAnalysis” file that you posted online, but the window brep is loadable.
  • If I would like to analyze different geometry of fenestration, such as perforated screen, should I attach the screen to the window brep?

Question 3_For Shading for daylighting

  • I would like to do the shading effect based on grid Analysis, so I add floor in the original file but it shows error “ index out of range: 0”.
  • If I would like to use different geometry of louvers, such as teethed blind, what can I do for that?

Above all, I would like to analyze different geometry of fenestration systems, such as special louvers or perforated screens, so I would like to attach those complex geometry to daylight analysis. When I went through the workshop video on youtube, I guess those analysis is mainly based on glazing, so I am still confused that how I can connect different geometry of fenestration to Ladybug and Honeybee. Is there any example file that shows analysis of perforated screen or similar design?

Thank you so much for your reply.

Hi Hui-ling,

I can see that Chris has already answered to a number of your questions in an email. Can you update me here that which questions are still valid? Also I suggest to post your questions one by one as it will be much easier to help.

Also please update your components to the latest version. That may solve couple of issues that you have here.

Back to your question about fenestration, if it is a regular perforated screen then you can use mixedFunctions, otherwise you can just create the geometry as a brep and put it in front of the window. Are they dynamic or just fixed shadings?

Mostapha

Thank you for your reply. I updated to the latest version and the questions here are the questions after Chris's mail:

1. For the 004_gridBasedAnalysis file ( question 1 image)

  • (1-1) I attached new box by adding new breps, and the floor shows the numbers on the floor. The result would change when I changed the opening ratio in step 7, but it would not change when I decrease or increase the opening ratio in step 6. Therefore, I am confused of the work of index for opening ratio in step 6.

2. For illuminanceAnalysis file

I would like to attach customized geometry for window, so I tried this file.

  • (2-1) The floor brep is unable to be loaded when I open the “ illuminanceAnalysis” file that you posted online before, but, at the same time, the window brep is loadable.

3. For Shading for daylighting file

  • (3-1) I would like to do the shading effect based on grid Analysis, so I add a surface as the floor brep in the original file but it shows error “ index out of range: 0”.
  • (3-2) If I would like to use different geometry of louvers, such as teethed blind, what can I do for that?
  • (3-3) How can I make them dynamic? Is there any tutorial for that?

4. For the glareAnalysis for perforated screen file

  • (4-1) Do you mean the brep that connect to building should be whole building without any hole?
  • (4-2) I successfully connected my perforated screen as  create the geometry as a brep in front of the window. On the other hand, when I ran simulation, the exe window showed warning and I am not sure it will effect my result or not even it the image looked fine. How should I fix that?

And I also update the new files. Thank you so much for your reply again.

Hi Again. I answer your questions one by one and also post the images that you sent for other users reference. If you can post your question in a similar manner that would be really helpful. Don't be shy to open up multiple discussions:

1.1 The confusion comes from the fact that they are separated from each other. In step 7 you are reading the results form the folder. Step 6 is for running the analysis. In step 7 you make the decision about which part of the result do you want to read from. If you get the results from runDaylightAnalysis component then the results will match to your sliders in number 6.

2-1. I should say that I don't completely understand your question but here is a discussion on this topic that I hope help you get started:

http://www.grasshopper3d.com/group/ladybug/forum/topics/add-glazing...

3-1) The issue will go away if you update to the newest version. The component will return the results itself and you don't need to use readRADResults component.

3-2) In daylighting simulation RADIANCE doesn't know if the object is a shading or is a wall. All it cares about is the geometry and the assigned material. You can model your shadings as you want as Breps and then pass them through HBSurface, apply desired RADMaterial and add it to the scene. Does it make sense?

3-3) It is possible. Check advanced example for daylighting simulation -007 (https://app.box.com/s/znns0dtewd1tclicx74q). My suggestion is to spend more time getting yourself comfortable with Grasshopper and Honeybee with simpler examples before jumping to advanced examples.

4-1) As I mentioned in question 3 any shape will be fine, connected or disconnected.

4-2) The warning is fine as far as you don't see many of them. You can use a denser mesh by setting up the meshSettings to avoid nonplanar surfaces.

Ok. That was it for now. Let's track your questions separately. You can attach related files and images for each question instead of sending them as a single zip file. Will be much easier to help and to track later. Let us know if you have any further questions. You already made a really great progress and I am looking forward to see more. -Mostapha

Thank you so much, and I will separate my question next time.
