In my opinion, rhino is a great application for industrial design, very precise and flexible.
Soon there will be a mac osx port too, if you care about it.
About your algebra question. You can play without it, like I do. You can go into algebra or code if your really into it.
If you are interested in generative engines, you can also look into paracould.
