Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Well... this started here ( http://www.grasshopper3d.com/forum/topics/tensile-membranes-test ) and God knows where is heading.

In fact I had plans to provide one (out of many) example that could be in favor of MinSurf (not on par with Kangaroo by any means - BUT we ALWAYS approximate things in the membrane business). But it turned that since the mesh is "ideal" Kangaroo is almost real-time. Anyway compare the 2 results that are "almost" similar (add some "" more).

The usual chaotic collection of decisions (via Gates) allows you to activate or not Kangaroo (MinSurf is on by default) and treat the base ring either as the top or in "all the way fixed" mode (very expensive, go for it if your fee is related with the Budget).

Seeing Kangaroo working in this type of well defined mesh (almost sexy I confess) makes me think that the first man who could provide maths for a "similar kind" of mesh in any given nurbs (like the one used in the initial thread of mine as above) ... well...he would become a national hero (and quite wealthy).

But what happens if you start doing variations with the trusses? What type of input you need in order to achieve the perfect mesh all the times?

He he

And here's the usual challenge (for the very brave):

Get this anchor prototype - related with the MERO top ring (very close to the real items scheduled for that project) and ... well... do some real-life thing (spot the missing "cables" from the definition posted and the peripheral edge pre-tension policy). Of course this is not designed with Rhino.

And in case that you can't to do it think: what's urgently missing from Grasshopper in order to communicate with a proper AEC/MCAD application? (I could accept even structured "axis + coordinate systems" baked in proper block structures via STEP).

That said the desired block structure has as follows (either as solids or "lines + coordinate systems"):

Void node assembly

MERO axis (to excel lists for drilling)

   MERO conical end fix (shared)

   MERO tube (feature driven)

   MERO ball (feature driven)

   MERO adapter (feature driven)

   NORSMAN tensioner (standard item)

   Membrane anchor assembly (void)

        Membrane sheet metal1 (feature driven)

        Membrane sheet metal2 (feature driven)

Membrane fabric fix (shared - feature driven)

Membrane peripheral tensioner (shared - feature driven)

best, Peter
