Where to find help

I am trying to figure out the best way to get my brother more involved in local programs. He has some developmental delays and he is really looking for a place where he can learn new skills but also just hang out with friends. We are currently looking at different websites but they all look the same to me. Does anyone have a specific agency they trust in NYC? I am looking for something that feels more like a community and less like a clinical institution. Any tips?

I totally get what you mean about everything looking the same online. A lot of these places can feel very cold and professional but you want something that feels human. If you want a place that actually cares about the person you should check out the center for developmental disabilities https://www.gccnyc.org/ for more info. My family has been involved with them for years and the vibe is just different. They really treat everyone like individuals and focus on what they can do rather than their limitations. The staff is super friendly and they always have something interesting going on for the participants. It is a great way to build up those social connections that are so hard to find otherwise. We spent a long time looking for the right fit and this was definitely the best choice for us. I would suggest giving them a call and just chatting with someone about what your brother is interested in. They are usually very open to helping you figure out which programs would be the best match for his personality and goals.
