I used the pen because it made it much easier to tell the pen to go back to that place when it draws the tattoo. I can tell the pen to move 3 cm closer to my arm when calibrating, and then when it is drawing on that point later it already knows to go exactly 3 cm. Using a proximity sensor I would have to accurately map that data to the pen servo motor.

why don't use proximity sensor? be careful man, don't try to make a hole in your hand
