Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

The Shelter was initially a thesis project on the manufacturability of advanced freeform architecture in concrete but when presented to the project partners there was no hesitation in the desire to construct the Shelter. Now we are halfway through the project and the Shelter is looking great. The next weeks will show whether our structural assessments were correct and our post-tension system will function as planned.

Grasshopper was used to model the wood interior and make drawings available for CNC milling.

You can follow the project at our homepage, where there is more details on the initial project.

We have also posted some images on our current progress.

One should expect problems if the right ways and tools are not used for mattress manufacturing. Thus, for the same reason, there are some ways mentioned on this website that are accessible by a click here. All potential users should read it.

What kind of concrete is CRC?Are your using cnc routers to mill you foam molds? How many pieces do you cast to make one structure. Have you thought about using GFRC concrete and doing single cast pieces, they would be much lighter and stronger also you would need no metal reinforcement.

Hi Joshua,

We are working with CRC High Performance concrete which is cast in the polystyren milled moulds.  The concrete parts are then tied together by a post-tensioning system.

I hope this answers your question.

Hello I am getting ready to build free form fabric structures using urethane foam and shotcrete . I would be interested to know what method of construction you are using. This is a dome I just built using the same technique. What are the thickness of the walls and what is the method behind it?
