Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

This design fell out of a discussion with Mohammed Yazdi earlier this year, thought you might like to see it. Machined and engraved 6061 aluminum, about 9" inches wide, .300" thick

I suppose it could be built up with very high resolution 3D printing but you'd still never get the finish you'd achieve with chisels, and some touch up would be required.

Nice work Mark. Beautiful piece of art.

HI Ethan,

how neat is that? the 'chip carving' designs. No, wasn't my intetnion, but I must have reinvented the wheel a bit.

For square corners, there are a couple of hand techniques, and a few cnc techniques that can be used. There does come a time to put away the cnc mill and break out the engraving tools, and the chisels, if you want and need truely sharp inside corners. Milling, you can use a decreasing series of tool diameters (.250, .187, .125, .067) to progressively get the corners done, and then switch to a single or double edge v-shape tool. you need to be creative how you use grasshopper to calculate and select tool paths to send to your mill. An alternative is to embrace the fact that a mill, say .125, will give you a curve with a 0.0625 radius, and then use this radius as a design feature. I could go on about cnc techniques, but probably outside the scope of a grasshopper tech support program.

Hi Mark,

I don't know if it was your intention, but this is reminiscent of a "chip carving" type design.

Since chisels are used, the sides and bottom in chip carving are quite crisp and I've wondered how this could be done in CNC. I'm sure it could be done using progressively smaller mills but at some point it will become prohibitive. Any thoughts?
