by Florent Experimentation about curved fold and cardboard digital fabrication.
Proposal of an asymmetrical vault structure. Curved folds are made of single curved sheets held together by notches.

Grasshopper was used for the geometrical construction of the surfaces, according to a non-uniform set of points, a bounding curve and parameters of height and curvature of the vaults.
Surfaces were then arranged and unrolled in Rhino.
Grasshopper was used a second time for constructing the notch shapes and a final fabrication model.
The sheets were finally cutted on a CraftRobo machine and assembled by hand.

Cardboard's natural flexibility is crucial to the achievement of the notches assembling, but the structure appears to bend due to its elasticity. Largest curved sheets are applying strong constraints to the overall structure (trying to go back to their original state, flat), and smaller half-sheets on the edge can't resist. I believe that in a larger structure, with more vaults interlocking themselves this effect would be lowered.
