by Basim Shamsuddin the walkway needed to cross thee roadways, which combining with the desire to keep a uniform leg spacing proved a challenge. We tested a number of spacings from 7.5m to 12m, settling on 10.5m spacing to balance the beam depth against not wanting too dense leg spacings

by Basim Shamsuddin The width of the leg footings is proportional to the height of the walkway from the ground, ranging from 1.5m wide, to 4m wide at the greatest height (approx 13m). The girth of the cigar shaped timber legs is proportional to its height.

by Basim Shamsuddin A rather extensive list of variables made the adjustment at a later stage of design far more feasible, for example, the splay angle of the balusters, and the detail profile of the plate connections are both angled at 10deg, but various iterations were explored prior to settling on the final version

by Basim Shamsuddin This is my final definition for the Stihl Treetop Walkway, at Westonbirt National Arboretum. The definition was my first project in grassshopper, and if starting again I would have used more referenced geometry. Part of the process for me was to also explore the extent to which geometry could be described as a series of relationships. The only geometric input was a curve to define the route, and the topography. THis produced a detailed model which was the basis for all of the construction documentation.
