Hi, why now try it out in genoform. Your chairs can rpdcue a rich set of variations. The new version works much better.

Glad to here that. I believe that the generative design is the design process that everyone will be using. So we need to develop good workprocesses. Pls join the opengenerative community, we will keep you posted. I can send you a paper that I am working on if you send me your email address.

Yes, in fact thats one of the things I'm working on at the moment, floor plan design iteratoin. It's a complicated problem and I'm hoping that I can, in the future, hook it up to galapagos and create extensive librairies of both furniture homes and cities. The thing is, I haven't needed to step outside of rhino very often, and will likley need to do so less and less as new pulg-ins (such as the BIM) get integrated. Still, excel has been usefull in sun simulations and the like... I'm currently working on bringing in some more complex simulation tools into rhino, ei mold, HVAC etc...I haven't gone into excel, but I think it might be a more intuitive way for some to manipulate the data. Keep me updated on your work

As, I have mentioned there is no need to externalize the data. But we are developing this with the view of improving the performance of design. For eg. If we design a building with it, then we can analyse the thermal and lighting performance - which require different packages. So for this, it is best to have external data. Also, we are looking at generating thousands of designs and picking the best. We are just at the beggining of this game. By having a common design infrastructure it becomes possible to share. Just imagine generating a room layouts and furniture that will run into millions of possibilities. So data management may be useful as complexity increases.

Yes thats what I'm doing, a whole slew of them at once, fortunately this isn't so hard...
sivam, maybe I haven't been able to finish the def so I dont sse the advantage as of yet, but I can easily set minmax values, even manipulate said values or the amplitue of my domain in grasshopper, I can also constantly modify the numer of iterations and change those iterations on a dime...again, maybe separating the data is cleaner, but that can be done in rhino as well, the only advantage I can think of for the excel file is if other ppl were going to add to it. THat is, if they weren't random numbers but rather, well... and excel file with specific targets that someone who doesnt know grasshopper had made...which is actually quite usefull...

Hi Jf,

Does your question pointing my definition or Sivam's comment on how to create it with his own method? I think there is a confusion in the conversation between you two. The images you have seen are created in GH without the help of Sivam's method. Chair has controlled parameters like seat width, heigth, back angle and so.. All parameters are taken from sliders which are controled manually. And chairs baked one by one.
I think you look for a way of creating the forms automatically and baking a total number of variations at once which I havent tried yet.

Very good question. You can certainly do it in grasshopper without using XL. With generative design:

1) You can explroe 1000's of desings - so you need to save them to go back to them
2) You may need to ensure certain min max limits
3) You may want to add equations into your generative scheme and have some parameters driven my equations
4) You may want to calculate some parameters

for these reasons its good to havethe data seperate. What you see in opengen is an early version. it will soon have some modifications that will make it a lot more powerful and also useful.

Hey, so in the meantime I've been working out how to do it grasshopper, I'm just wondering, why do it in XL, I have a random function with a domain in grasshopper....just wondering what the advantage of doing it in excel is

I was reffering to the method used in opengenerativedesign.com where you can create variations out of grasshopper models.

sry I must be missing something, to what exactly are you refering too? which scroll bar and xl table are you refering too?
