algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi Santiago,

I have a question about the geometry output from SkinDesigner.

Is it possible to bake the glass as a surface instead of a polysurface? Is it somewhere in the code of the components or there is a different way? I would like to test it in daylight simulations, where we use a single surface to represent the glass.

Hi Mihail,

Sure you can, there is actually a specific component and workflow for generating simulation friendly geometry with SkinDesinger.

Take a look at this video created a while back by Chris Mackey co-founder of Ladybug Tools.

Thanks for the help! I just had a chance to look at the video. This is very useful to know. 

However, for this particular task I need the geometry that is already baked in Rhino to be simplified from a polysurface to a surface. I am guessing that this is pre-programmed within a component, that perhaps I can tweak for my purpose?

Hi Mihail,

There is a specific component in the design controllers section that can change the glass to be a surface. This must be used while you are generating the facade, it won't work if you already have a facade generated that is not controlled by SkinDesinger if that makes sense. See the screen capture below showing the component (called PP_LBHB_output) connected to the Skin Generator.

Sorry for replying in such long intervals, but I am doing this on the side.

As I understand for the component to work I need to have a facade that is not create yet. I tried that but it seems to come out weird. I attach two images of with and without the LBHB component. While the glass output is a surface, the rest of the geometry somehow disappears. What really wanted to have is the output to be same as on image 2, but the glass to be represented as in image 1. Am I not understanding how this is supposed to work?

By the way I am not attaching a file, because I just tried this on one of the example files availble on Hydra.

Do you have an example where you have achieved what I am after?

Could you provide both Rhino and gh files? I tested with this hydra sample file and worked fine in my computer.

The PP_LBHB_output component converted the glass solid to a surface and also removes any unwanted geometry that has a projection above the threshold  (defaults at 4 inches approx). This is to remove mullions and any small shades that may not be needed in the environmental analysis.

Could it be a problem that the file is not placed on the local machine, but on OneDrive? Or that when i generated the images in my previous comment I had used rhino 5 and I should have used v6 instead? I just tried both scenarios and it seems to work.

Is it possible to overwrite this default threshold of 4 inches? For my purposes I would like to keep the thickeness of the wall and the mullions and basically all other elements except the glass. 

Hi Mihail,

I believe some of your problem has to do with the units you are using in Rhino and the PP_LBHB_output threshold set at 0.1 meters. By the way you can change that value by plugging a smaller value or 0.00 at the input i the component, that will include all the mullions/sunshades projecting from the glass surface.

Now the purpose of this component is to simplify any geometry for analysis so mullions behind glass are always excluded and walls are also flattened to surfaces since they don't add any value to solar radiation analysis.

If you want to keep everything the same and flatten the glass you will have to generate two skins and get what you need from each of them. See the gh capture below and attached script to show the workflow.
