Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi,everyone,

I was trying to use Honeybee Openstudio Component to run a simulation with HVAC input. And then I got error.

First I thought it might be the version I have of OpenStudio, but when I install the 1.9.0, problem still there.

I have EnergyPlus 8.3.0 Radiant 5.0 and OpenStudio 1.9.0

Can anyone help? Thank you all!

Zilong,

The file runs fine on my system! Have you tried to close Rhino and Grasshopper and re-open the file? Can you give us more information on when this happens? Is it happening after you run the analysis for multiple times?

I also checked the idf file and the object that gives you error is written correctly.

Hi, Mostapha,

I did restart my computer and it didn't work. I started with OpenStudio 1.10.0 and it gave me similar error except version in IDF = "8.4". So I figured probably I need OpenStudio 1.9.0 and I did install it and uninstalled 1.10.0. So in the warning message, IDF version back to 8.3, but other errors remained.

Another thing to mention is that I used to have EnergyPlus 8.3 and 8.4 both installed and later I uninstalled 8.4.

If it is working in your system, I might just try it on other computers on Monday. My computer is just junk with all kinds of softwares and multiple versions of simulation engines. That is probably the case.

Thank you very much!

Hi Zilong,

Before you change your system can you check the attached file? I updated all the components as well as the OpenStudio component. The new component will look for EnergyPlus under OpenStudio folder so it will find the right version based on the version of OpenStudio.

Hi, Mostapha,

It works! I will save your codes to somewhere safe! Thanks a lot!

And I have some other question regarding simulation results.

I am running the simulation through both EnergyPlus and Openstudio components with exact same input, but the outcome is a little bit different. Is this normal?

And, after I update the input HBZones with modified lighting schedule generated by Daysim, the electric lighting consumption from Openstudio Component turns to "0". EnergyPlus Component seems working correctly. Any thoughts?

Thank you again!

Zilong,

I apologize for the late response.  The csv lighting schedules were not having an effect because of a bug that I just fixed:

https://github.com/mostaphaRoudsari/Honeybee/commit/43c2587024a7e7a...

Update your components and you should see that you now get non-zero lighting.

Also, I would expect some differences between OpenStudio and Energyplus for heating/cooling since OpenStudio does more detailed modelling of the HVAC system (even when the system is Ideal Air, it gives more specifications than the Write IDF component does).

I would expect the electric lighting to be the same if you are using the exact same lighting schedule for each.  Is this the case in your image?  Do you find that you still get different lighting when you use the DAYSIM csv schedule (now that it csv schedules are fixed for OpenStudio)?

-Chris

Hi, Chris,

Thank you so much for your help! It is really great to see it is working! Another question: Why is cooling and total thermal is missing from the output in your image attached? Is it because the HVAC system I selected that doesn't cool the building at all?

Forgive me if I am asking some silly question, since I don't know much about energy model and MEP stuff. Just doing what my boss wanted me to do and experimenting.

Thank you for your kind reply!
