Early Minecraft nostalgia and losing interest: is it worth going back?

Lately modern Minecraft updates just don’t do it for me, and chasing nostalgia on old versions or modpacks only lasts a couple of days before hitting a wall. I’m starting to think it’s pointless trying to force the fun in a sandbox game I've outgrown. Has anyone here successfully transitioned from casual survival into competitive ranked games (like climbing elo in shooters or MOBAs) to get that sense of real progress back? What games helped you break the burnout?

I reckon 1.7.3 and 1.2.5 were the absolute best old school versions. Now everyone tries to bring that feeling back through modpacks even though the real issue is usually a lack of knowledge regarding fundamental mechanics. Still old versions are like old friends. You take a look hit that nostalgic nostalgia for the past and move on. They often turn out to be much more promising for players.
