Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi Jon,

I am just testing your Plug-in (which is quite useful by them way), but I am having some issues with it.

When running it with Rh 5 WIP it takes forever to start Rhino. Is there anything I can do, but disabling it?

Cheers,

Phillip

Hi Phillip,

I appreciate the frustration.  Believe me, if there is anything I can do to accelerate start up, I will.  When I was last profiling this, it seemed to be the dialog forms causing the bottlenecks.   But emails to the Rhino developers (including Bob McNeel himself) have so far responded along the lines of Rhino v5 is in Beta and we will tune up start up times prior to release.  I encourage users frustrated with this to post to the rhino newsgroup or email to help prioritize the resolution of this.

I really don't understand why something that loads in split seconds in v4 can take 20 seconds (or longer) in v5.  Maybe David and Steve can advise?

I do promise I'll do everything I can to improve this.

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,

I am having a similar issue.  Rhino 5 WIP worked fine until I installed Grasshopper, and even after that the first few startups were fine, however now it is taking about 5 minutes to startup Rhino, from clicking on the icon until I see any indication that the software is running.  Is this due to Grasshopper, or is this a separate Rhino issue?  Anything you can suggest I do? Thanks.

Cheers,

Sam

Hi Sam,

If you search the rhino newsgroup, there's been lots of reports about slow startups, and certainly my plugins were for a long time culprits to cause this.

It took me a few months of testing and isolating code to finally determine the cause (I still don't understand what changes in Rhino / dotNET targeting would cause exactly the same code to load under a second in Rhino v4 to 20 or 30 seconds in v5).  I have minimized and deferred the delay (not totally eliminated it, you will notice a few seconds delay if you start a particular dialog) but plugin loading time should be back to under a second.

If you think it's my plugins (and the only real way to be sure is to time the start up, close rhino and uninstall/delete my plugins and restart Rhino and compare time), then please make sure you have installed the latest versions from http://www.geometrygym.com/downloads  If the build date is prior to the 18th November, please let me know which plugins and I will upload a new version.  I am very interested if the start up lag is still caused by my plugin but it should be fixed.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Jon

Hi Jon,

It seems the problem was unrelated to grasshopper.  Your newsgroup search suggestion lead me to a solution, at least for the time being.  I had a corruption of some sort in the Rhino registry somewhere apparently.  The fix: create a new "scheme" using my desktop Rhino 5 shortcut by adding /Scheme=newschemename in the target box. In my case it was the following addition: '....Rhino4.exe" /Scheme=edit'.  The result is startup in about 10-20 seconds.  Thanks for you help.

It may not be a lasting fix, but Im talking to Pascal at McNeel about it, so I'll let you know if there is more to be done to solidify the good results.  Thanks again.

Sam
