Save file error in grasshopper using the save file icon

I have a very large gh file, which I am very careful to save often. I have been using the save disk icon to save my work. When I exited Grasshopper/Rhino and came back. I exited because there were two versions of the same file and I had no idea on which one I was working. In order to reset the system, I exited everything. 6 hours of work was gone! Nothing had been saved. I was saving every 30 minutes...

During the same work session I attempted to use close the file function... last line in the in the File drop-down menu only to find the gh file was not closed and there were two versions of the same file present. Could these two errors be linked together?

has anyone experienced anything like this?
