SUMMARY:Logics of Parametric Design // BMSCE Bangalore
DESCRIPTION:\n\n// Title\nLogics of Parametric Design\n \n// Level\nB
 asic & Intermediate (No previous skills required)\n \n// Agenda\nTo
give an insight to computation, algorithms and parametric design metho
dologies to students who do not come from a computational background.
The idea of designing parametrically and use of computational methodol
ogies is new to Indian context and has great potentials. Digital exper
imentations using computational techniques (primarily Rhino3D + Grassh
opper) will initiate the discourse, followed by technical sessions, th
eoretical discussions and round-table conference. The primary aim of w
orkshop is to introduce students with the emerging domain of computati
onal design in architecture.\n \nParametric Design, in the history of
architecture, has defined many rules for current designers and for fu
ture practitioners to follow. One of the strongest aspect that is prom
inent from this style is ‘geometry’. Arguably, there is nothing ne
w about geometry and aesthetics forming the most prominent aspect of a
ny style or era. The language of any style, in the long history of arc
hitecture, is visually defined by geometry or shape, beyond the princi
ples that define the core of the style. In the distinguishable style o
f parametric architecture, geometry has played and is continuing to pl
ay an integral role. And with this fairly young style, there are many
strings of myths and false notions associated.\n \nThe workshop aims
to provide an insight to ‘parametric design’ and embedded logics b
ehind it through a series of design explorations using Rhinoceros & Gr
asshopper platforms. An insight to Computational Design and its subset
s of Parametric Design, Algorithmic Design, Generative Design and Evol
utionary Design will be provided through presentations, technical sess
ions & studio work. A strong focus will be made on logics of design th
at can potentially be coded through a rational and parametric approach
.\n \nAll rat[LAB]EDUCATION Workshops are tied up with a larger agend
a of a buildable project for New Delhi, INDIA (Proposed for late 2015)
& a publication scheduled for 2016. All participants will become a pa
rt of the growing EDUCATION network and will be exclusively invited fo
 r future events & studio activities.\n \n// Methodology\nWorkshop ha
s been structured to teach participants the use of Grasshopper® (Gene
rative modelling plug-in for Rhinoceros) as a generative tool, and way
s to integrate it with architectural processes. Throughout the use of
visual scripting with Grasshopper participants will learn how to buil
d and manage parametric data structures (from simple lists to complex
data trees) and to develop data driven geometries & forms. No previous
knowledge of Grasshopper is required, but a basic knowledge of Rhino
modelling is preferred.\n\nFor further details: www.rat-lab.org\n\nFor
