SUMMARY:AA Stuttgart Visiting School- Mixed Matters: Concrete
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Mixed Matters Visiting School will be the first of i
 ts kind focusing each time on a rotating exploration of a different mu
 lti-material, as opposed to a fixed geographic location. The scope wil
 l be to explore contemporary practices of material design, moving away
  from explorations of single, isotropic or composite materials and tow
 ards a new field of investigation dealing with material mixtures and g
 rading. The aim will be to discover new types of graded materials mixe
 s through which we can begin to question ideas of tectonics, messy bui
 lding processes, energy, resource and material wastage and the minimal
  aesthetics of sharp boundaries and uniformity. For the first cycle of
  this exploration we will be based at the Institute of Lightweight Str
 uctures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) and the office of str.ucture GmbH
  Engineering in Stuttgart, where we will attempt to stretch the possib
 ilities of what can be mixed with concrete. We will be utilising the c
 oncrete spraying robot at ILEK and effectively building individual sma
 ll scale prototypes in graded concrete. Intensive digital material sim
 ulations will be made alongside physical material prototyping and towa
 rds designing the prototypes.\nProminent Features of the workshop/ ski
 lls developed\n• Teaching team consisting of AA Diploma tutors and I
 LEK and str.ucture engineers. • Access to the studio spaces, worksh
 op facilities and concrete spraying robot for graded concrete manufact
 uring of the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Desig
 n (ILEK) and str.ucture GmbH Structural Design Engineering. • Compu
 tational skills tuition on Grasshopper, Karamba Parametric Structural 
 Engineering, Sofistik Finite Element Analysis & Rhino Membrane softwar
 e. • Fabrication of small to medium scale functionally graded concre
 te prototypes.  • Lectures series by academics and practitioners in 
 the fields of architecture and engineering.\nEligibility\nThe workshop
  is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates a
