SUMMARY:AA Istanbul Visiting School 2016 - Tectonic Symbiosis
DESCRIPTION:\nAA Istanbul Visiting School, in collaboration with Istan
bul Bilgi University, is a unique learning and making experience. Cont
inuing its expertise on generative design methodologies and large-scal
e prototyping techniques, the programme will investigate patterns of e
mergence, differentiation and complexity in natural formation processe
s which will be transformed to digital simulation platforms for design
purposes. In contemporary architectural processes, a significant dive
rsion from linear parametric tools towards generative design simulatio
ns is taking place. The design and analysis processes will reflect thi
s shift by focusing on simulations, whereby attention will be kept on
the process of design generation as opposed to the final form itself.
The design agenda of the programme will revolve around the design and
fabrication of a one-to-one scale pavilion.\nThe programme will be for
mulated as a two-phase process:\nStage 1: Participants will gain an un
derstanding of formation processes in nature, coupled with core concep
ts related to complexity. During this stage, basic and advanced tutori
als on generative design algorithms and analysis tools will be provide
 d. AA Istanbul VS will perform as a team-based workshop promoting coll
aboration and research. Participants will be introduced to advanced fa
brication techniques.\nStage 2: Participants will propose design inter
ventions based on the skills and knowledge gained during the first sta
ge. Study models of various scales will be produced, finally followed
by the fabrication and assembly of a full scale working prototype whic
h unifies the design goals of the programme.\nThe design agendas of AA
Athens and AA Istanbul Visiting Schools will directly create feedback
on one another, allowing participation in either one or both Programm
es.\nProminent features of the programme / skills developed:\n\nPartic
ipants will be part of an active learning environment where the large
tutor to student ratio (4:1) allows for personalized tutorials and deb
ates.\nThe toolset of AA Istanbul includes but is not limited to Rhino
ceros, Grasshopper, and Processing.\nParticipants will have access to
large-scale digital fabrication tools.\nDesign seminars and internatio
nal lecture series will support the key objectives of the programme.\n
\nEligibility\nThe workshop is open to current architecture and design
students, PhD candidates and young professionals.\nAccreditation\nPar
ticipants receive the AA Visiting School Certificate with the completi
on of the Programme. \nApplications\nThe AA Visiting School requires
a fee of £600 per participant, which includes a £60 Visiting Members
hip fee. Discount options for groups or for those wishing to apply for
both AA Istanbul and AA Athens Visiting Schools are available. Please
contact the AA Visiting School Coordinator for more details. \nThe d
eadline for applications is 30 May 2016. No portfolio or CV, only requ
irement is the online application form and fees. \nFor more informati
