algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Dear users,

in a couple of weeks I'm giving a lecture at the AAG10 conference and I'll be talking about Galapagos. Instead of a set of hypothetical scenarios I'd much prefer to show actual cases where Galapagos is used to solve a problem.

Of course I realise that in the current state Galapagos leaves much to be desired. Wishes have been pouring in since it was first included and I have every intention of working on these in the upcoming week(s). So if you run into problems trying to apply Galapagos please post them in this thread and I'll see about getting it fixed/added.

I talk about some of the behind-the-scenes algorithms that drive Galapagos in this post. It might be a good starting point if you want to learn a bit more about the details.

what i am trying to achive is to optimize this structure
so pentagons will search for pentagons to breed more pentagons....same thing with hexagons (i am refearing to wp faces)
do you think this is possible?
am i tryng to do something galapagos is not ment to do?

Another suggestion is that the galapagos editor should be a modeless,
or the result will be output so that we can review the result and get the parameter sets from it when we closed the editor.

just sent you my humble galapagos experiment. by the way, is there a possibility to bake the best of each generation at once so that we can somehow compare/contrast each other?

thanks for submitting. I think your request goes well with Sangsu's wish. When the Galapagos window becomes modeless and it becomes possible to select (and reinstate) a specific individual from a specific generation, it should be much easier to navigate the solution space.

I want to use Galapagos to divide a curve with equal distance of two points to "n" segments,I use the standard deviation to evaluate the difference of those distance.If i got a smallest SD so those distance are more like each other.BUT,I can't let Galapagos to avoid the overlap occurs.
For example,the distances of "0,2,4,6,8" all are 2,the SD of those distances is 0 (Ideally).but the SD of "0,4,8,4,8" is 0 too....I'm wonder if there is a way to evaluate SD and meanvalue together...

Sorry to bother you guys again,but I found the if I set too much slider as genome,the resualt is not good enough.Don't know how to get it right...

I think that it's simply because with more genomes Galapagos needs more time to come up with an accurate result.

One thing you can do, though, is decrease the rendundancy of the possible genome combinations which give you the same result (following your earlier post these would be 0,2,4,6,8; 2,0,4,6,8; 2,4,0,6,8; ... 4,8,2,0,6 and so on).

Try this:


This modification asures that the sliders correspond to consecutive points on the curve, so Galapagos won't wast it's time by checking redundant configurations and should produce the result much quicker.
