Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself as say hello to everyone. I have been practicing architecture the past 10 years and have used Rhino for the majority of that time. I am now learning the basics of grasshopper and wanted to inquire about the most effective way in learning this tool. I have put it off for some time due to exams and just the fear of "the unknown" that is grasshopper. I do have some questions which may be somewhat naive in nature, so please excuse me. 

1) Do I need to know how to code to better learn grasshopper. Would learning the fundamentals in coding help? 

2) Besides the learn tab above, are there any other sources/books that you guys think would really help beginners? 

3) How often do people come up with definitions? Is this something new you do for each project or do you have one definition that you customize each time? Do most of you end up with huge definition libraries that you later apply to different project?

4) Can grasshopper be used for estimating/takeoff purposes? More "real world" applications. 


My main objective here is to learn this as a hobby and use it to build furniture for myself (mainly out of wood/steel), but would love to learn it for everyday application, or even just to make cool forms. Well ... Architecture (and AEC in general) require BIM type of main apps the likes of AECOSim or Revit. Additionally a lot of vertical apps. Plus MCAD apps since these days buildings more and more resemble machines (and require custom Articles for specs, cost pre-estimation and the likes).

Putting yourself against that "forest" you should answer the question N1: you want to just use (the unsafe option) these or cross the Rubicon and collaborate in some way with the software vendors? (the safe option plus numerous benefits: knowing what's in the pipeline years ago, solving bugs in no time etc etc etc). 

The question N2 is: do you get involved (or you want to) in "developing" all that the one way or the other? If yes using what "platform"? (so to speak).

The question N3 is: what are your estimations concerning the future in our trade? (count the tremendous acceleration of things as well plus the unavoidable AI factor (sooner or later)).

By answering these 3 ... you can easily answer the other questions of yours.

Bad news: future is past already.

1. You do not have to learn coding for Grasshopper. Of course it would be nice to know ...

2. Visit "here" and choose whatever you want. (especially ModeLab's Grasshopper Primer Third Edition should be included in the list.)

3. It depends on the job. You'll need another definition if the assignment is different.

  Of course it is convenient to apply definitions that you have already created for similar situations.

4. It is especially useful in the early stages, and the available range of GH is wider than you might think.

  Of course, I don't think it is an optimized tool in the final production stage.
