algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi Karamba,

I was wondering which Finite elements that is used to model beam and truss elements? I could see in the manual that you use the TRIC element for modelling shell elements, but I was not able to find the elements for beams and trusses. 

Is it a two node element, with 6 degrees of freedom in the nodes or what does it look like?

And another question is if it is possible to model an orthotropic material, such as timber? 

As far as I can see, all materials are assumed isotropic, and so is timber.

Hi Thea,

as far as I know from validation calculations, the beam elements are two node elements with 6 degrees of freedom at each node. For bending they are exact according to Bernoulli's beam theory. For tension and compression they are exact with the asumption of a constant strain along the axis, in case of compression buckling is considered as described in the manual. Torsion is (at least) exact according to St. Venant's theory, there is even a factor for the warping of cross sections sections such as I-beams.

All materials are isotropic so far.

Hi Thea,

at the moment (Karamba 1.2.2) only isotropic materials can be analyzed. The next release will probably contain also orthotropic materials.
