Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi there,

I am currently studying Architecture and have got the point where I need to put forward a dissertation proposal. I am considering using the topic of parametric design and how it could be used in an architectural practice.

To give me the confidence in pursuing this topic for the next year I thought I would just ask to see if anybody was local to the midlands in the UK who would be willing to offer support if I get stuck.

The dissertation would involve me using grasshopper to design a particular small scale structure but then use parametrics to provide me with different outcomes. I think my main worry is that I could get so far with this devoting so much time to the cause but then get stuck.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Sorry to bump this to the top again.

Anybody local?

Thanks

Marc

I am responding to this request despite my obvious handicap of being located in the Alps rather than the West Midlands. Are you looking for practising architecture firms in your area, or just for people to help you out with Grasshopper?

Hi David,

Thanks for your message! I was basically looking for someone that could offer me a bit of a safety net in case i hit a major brick wall with grasshopper during the dissertation. So whether this would be a practice or an individual it really doesn't matter, as long as there was someone I could talk to.

Thanks again

Marc

Hello Marc

this forum can provide you with a worldwide security net.

Well I can't help out with locals, but my advice is to make sure your supervisor isn't completely clueless about your topic. Otherwise what would be the point of having a supervisor in the first place? If there isn't anyone available at your university who both (1) fits the bill and (2) is willing to oversee, you need to make sure that whoever does supervise is well aware of this limitation.

My second bit of advice is that when it comes to software, having someone to talk to on-line isn't all that much worse than having someone to talk to in real life. And there's a heck of a lot of people on-line.

Thank you both for encouragement, I do appreciate it!!

I have a meeting with tutors this week so will create a post with an outline of what I intend to focus on for my dissertation with the hope of getting some initial thoughts from people.

Thanks again guys!
