Hahah When I have been to Rome I found the exact same face depicted on the mailbox near forum romanum using scratch paint technique. Great mimique btw! :D

U r right David ... they are contour lines  from mesh and plane intersection. well this strike me when i was going through Daniel Piker's old post and mine where u suggested me ways of extracting 2d outlines from image sampling.

You sure it's not just contour lines on a heightmap of the blurred image?
