algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Dear Jon and All

I wanted to ask a quick question

maybe the answer is simple 

I generated a mesh with sdrInflate and made it to a module for boxmorph in GH

but when I render the mesh I get really  strange result (ideally it should look like ETFE)

(please see image- looks like the upper layer is almost fine but the inside one gives this broken reflection) I tried several V-ray options and changing the material but never got the right result of glossy foil. but when I render only one mesh module all is just fine

it seems to me that the "box morph" is somehow damaging the mesh 

ps. the module I had to divide and morph separately cause I didn't know how to apply the mesh and frame evenly so maybe this is the problem?)

 

I'm attaching the file with a sample cause whole surface was to heavy

Hey Agnieszka,

Once you mesh geometry in rhino things become a bit more complicated; for example, trying to explode mesh surfaces might give you different results depending on how you set up your mesh. Since you're doing this in rhino and then referencing the geometry, I exploded the meshed structure/frame you're referencing for the morph and then used the 'weld' command in rhino (with 180 for angle tolerance); try to reference your geometry with the same gh definition again and see if it works; rhino model attached...if it doesn't work, then I'd recommend going back to surfaces for the frame..good luck again !

sorry Rene but somehow I'm not able to reply to your latest post

I'm afraid it doesn't work
I tried to weld the mesh but is doesn't join together.. it stays in parts like before
when I reference it like that to morph it takes only some parts- when I simply join it I the get error again

second thing I tried:
the structure as surface referenced to GH and meshBrep it in GH.
then all worked fine for lower part but not working for the upper one- this time no error, nice preview but doesn't bake. the command simply does nothing - any ideas to that one? :)

and another question

Is there a big difference between rendering surface or mesh for this kind of shape? maybe there is really no point to fight ...

I'm sorry that didn't work for you! You say you tried weld and then join, did you try joining and then welding instead? I believe it had worked when I tried it unless I misunderstood something.

Regarding the mesh not baking, hover over the gh output mesh you're trying to bake and see if it reads 'invalid mesh'; if that is the case, do explode mesh, weld mesh or join mesh and then all in gh using meshedit tools and it should bake fine. If it's not joined after baked, adjust mesh settings in gh or simply join in rhino.

Regarding your last question, it could depend on many factors such as type of geometry, complexity, material, renderer, etc. In my case I'd say meshes are at least faster to process before rendering

I found a way around using some mesh tools and referencing a baked mesh back to GH and thickening it

It takes a bit longer but I got my result at the end
