algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Dear Jon and All

I wanted to ask a quick question

maybe the answer is simple 

I generated a mesh with sdrInflate and made it to a module for boxmorph in GH

but when I render the mesh I get really  strange result (ideally it should look like ETFE)

(please see image- looks like the upper layer is almost fine but the inside one gives this broken reflection) I tried several V-ray options and changing the material but never got the right result of glossy foil. but when I render only one mesh module all is just fine

it seems to me that the "box morph" is somehow damaging the mesh 

ps. the module I had to divide and morph separately cause I didn't know how to apply the mesh and frame evenly so maybe this is the problem?)

 

I'm attaching the file with a sample cause whole surface was to heavy

It might be worth posting an example model with mesh (ready to render) to Rhino or vray forums.  I don't have vray so I can't test here.  

It's possible the some face vertex are in opposing directions (but this shouldn't be the case).  I'm happy to look at fixing the cause of this if it can be identified.

Hi Agnieszka,

The Geogym inflated mesh is fine and so is the box morph; the only problem is your morph object. Vray does not like grouped geometry nor 'flat' geometry apparently, so:

1. ungroup the geometry you're morphing as well as the one you're baking

2. use Giulio Piacentino's mesh editor (weaverbird) to 'thicken' the inflated 'etfe' panels before baking

Hi again,

For sure, the expression was just " -D " so that the mesh was offset/thickened inwards to avoid clashing with the structure holding your panels; however, I did that after imputing the already-baked mesh in your rhino model; if you do it inside grasshopper then the process might be a bit different (but not necessarily, just check if all meshes are thickening in the same direction). Also make sure to 'flatten' your mesh geometry before thickening/baking! Good luck :)

I'm getting an error when connecting a mesh to the WB component

it disappears when I set the SurfaceBox Height number from -0.02 to 0.02

but I need it to be negative as it should morph under the surface to get this mirrored frame part

do you know maybe how can I go around it?

can you post your current definition? I'll take a look!

I'm sending the definition

before, the frame was a surface but I decided to mesh it in Rhino to see whether I'll get nicer render result 

I referenced it to GH

and now one part doesn't work and one is just fine

please have a look if you can

earlier after baking I was exploding the ETFE mesh and manually deleting the  parts on the edges of whole surface

Now I can't explode it somehow and have this "naked" mesh leftovers

I'm aware that It's probably not how I should do it but I couldn't think of any smarter way
