Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi!

I am getting plenty of errors in this definition:

unknown variable encountered: rxd (on the rotAx)

data conversion failed from text to integer (on Item)

https://explodebreps.wordpress.com/grasshopper-definitions/truncate...

Anyone who can help? Or can propose a different method to construct a Truncated octahedron.

Thanks.

I wonder if your download application modified the XML in some way. The expression imported fine here.

You can fix it by replacing the expression with 'rad(x)' (where you get the unknown variable error). Also the panel contains an empty string, which will fail to convert to integer. You can just remove that empty line.

Thank you for the quick response!

Yes, I had managed to find the empty line.

Not sure I understand the rad(x) expression...

Currently it looks rather warped.

Do you have any other info on how to write this kind of shape?

Thank a lot.

There are also other examples of how to model a truncated octahedron on the forum, that might offer a faster/easier solution than attempting to fix your current definition. Also, there's a Rhino plugin for modelling a whole host of Polyhedra that might be an option.

I was looking for that but I can't seem to find a clear enough example.

Unfortunately the plug-in doesn't work on Mac.

Thank you anyways!

Ah I see. If the Mac version allows you to use Grasshopper plugins, you could use the "Platonic Octahedron" component that comes with the LunchBox plugin. It has an truncation input:

Edit: On the other hand, it might actually be more fun and useful to construct it from scratch, in the long run of things..

Yeah. No Lunchbox for Mac.

I have very little knowledge in Rhino. But I will give it a try...

Any tutorials/things you can recommend?

Thanks.

The Learn menu above is a great starting point. I particularly would recommend the ModeLab primer.

Any chance you could give it a look?

I can't figure out how to fill the square shapes.

In a second stage, I would need to group all shapes into one geometry and apply moves like in my first example...

Thanks!

It didn't worked on your definition because there are sometimes 2 same brep ... but worked on the first link you gave. Your definition has many other problems.

Hmmm that doesn't work on my version of the first definition.

As I said your definition has some duplicate faces so explore each component to search the duplicate or cull the duplicate. You can do it with cull duplicate points, points are center of faces (area component)
