Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi all,

I've been wandering around the discussion forum and some other places but can't seem to find a good place to start regarding the problem of remeshing a triangular mesh to a quadrilateral one. (it seems like something Daniel would have some idea of..)

Any pointer or advice would be much appreciated!

Attaching two mesh samples (generated from Delaunay Mesh and MeshMachine)..

Thanks a lot and best,

Tim

Hi.

I'm not sure if it's close to what you are after, but this is one way to go.

You'll need "Starling" topology remeshing tool and "Mesh Edit"+"Weaverbird" plug-ins.

And you can choose mapping topology.

Hi Hyungsoo,

Thanks a lot for your response.

This is helpful and actually what I was looking for earlier on in the process; however, what I'm after here is actually not a uniform remeshing, or redistribution of density, but the opposite - a quad remeshing that maintains or at least corresponds to the density distribution of the original triangular mesh.

Would you have any idea of that?

Thanks again!

Hi all,

Just pushing this back up, hoping for some advice!

Thanks a lot!

What you are trying to do is essentially the mesh holy grail. More than likely making existing tri to quad will not be perfect and have some leftover triangles. I think you will have better luck to bring it into Zbrush or MeshLab which have some really great remeshing magic. You could also try what Hyungsoo did and then pulling the mesh verts towards some attractors that define / simulate the original mesh vert density.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your response.

Like you said, I've tried the tri to quad component in GH which didn't work very well,

and then exported into MeshLab and tried the Quad Dominant filter which worked nicely.

I was just hoping for a workflow that could stay in GH and not having to export and import between platforms.

Would porting the codes of MeshLab into a script component in GH be an option?

Best,

Tim
