Logic behind these forms

Hi all,

I'd like to seek some advise in regards to the attached images and how may I go about achieving these forms. We don't have to go into detail but I do need a starting point as to what direction I'd need to take though. Ultimately, the definition might prove useful in furniture design.

From what I figure, I may be able to use GH's contour lines in the y-axis; extruding strips or perhaps even field lines w/ point charges.
