RoboFold presents the KingKong folding simulation and panelling design plugin for Grasshopper.

Design: Fold panels using curved folding and control panel distribution on surfaces with a range of attractor systems. Download the software, manual and example files from:  www.food4rhino.com/project/robofoldkingkong

Manufacture: The results of design using the KingKong facade tool are produced by RoboFold. The data generated will drive our robotics software, enabling manufacture using the RoboFold technology. 

Installation: When you need it, we generate the necessary detailing and layout data for mounting to a wall, wooden panelling system or subframe.

Engineering: You are responsible for the engineering.

What shapes can I fold in KingKong?

The easiest way to check this is to test your ideas using paper or card. Scan in you fold pattern to get the curved fold lines and edge lines, and let KingKong fold it.

What shapes can RoboFold manufacture?

Most shapes you can fold in paper by hand, we can fold in metal with robots. If you want to build a facade, or anything else, feel free to contact us and we can determine whether the fold type is feasible. Join one of our workshops to learn through making your own facade designs.

Pre-requisites:

KingKong makes use of components from the Kangaroo Physics plugin by Daniel Piker. Please download and install this before you open the example files.

Rotation controlled by flow-line attractor.

Clash detection.

KingKong doesn't appear to be installing correctly in Gh 0.9.0075. Is this a known issue? Thanks!

Could someone help me with this? much appreciated. I Just downloaded KingKong, but couldn't get it installed. It requires  Grasshopper Version 0.9.0014. O have a new version of GrassHopper 0.9.0065. Do I need to uninstall this one and try to install 0.9.0014 for it to work? Thank you very much.

Hi Moritz, generally the folding that KongKong is designed for are curved folding. These are a 1 Degree Of Freedom linkage, so you cannot control individual angles, just how much the whole piece is folding. I would suggest you use the existing GH comps if you want straight folds, as it would be easier to control angles like this.

Hey Robofold! Thanks for this amazing folding plug in! I really wanted to assign different angles to 1) different folds and 2) to different segments of folds. I got the attached definition and added a part to do so with a 'closest point' test and some replacements in the angles-list. 

It works fine if i want to assign, lets say a RestAngle of 30° for one and 60° for another, but it won't vary the angles within one fold. I assume its because of the way I set up the mesh, but when I increase the number of mesh faces (to allow some overall deformation according to the varying angles within one fold) I don't get nice results anymore... 

Any help is highly appreciated!
