Nik, there are different tiles. No underlying geometry.
I was testing different tiles at the corners, because they open too much because of no friction. So they geometrically lock at corners. For instance these two cases can be illustrated like this :
The project started from Ashkan's and David's braids:
The process of making those braids are shown here by hand but there is possible implementation in braiding machines, as this bit is part of FloraRobotica.eu project.
First the goal was to model them for Mateusz and me. It started from boxes and K2 was used to relax them using line-line collision + David Reeves spatial grid, to make collisions work together faster. Springs slowly reaches equal length to avoid overshooting. Another way is to relax correct quad mesh and then tile them (woven/braided mesh tile). Then again K2 is used to smooth stripes. There is a constant discussion how to give instructions to make them, as geometry itself is made so that they could be made in physical space.
