Linear City planning is a bad idea

Architects and urban designers keep falling in love with linear cities. This is a misguided desire for an interesting sublime form, rather than a well designed practical city.
It's cool to see a sublime straight line from space as it ignores all natural features making a god like architectural graffiti on to the planet. It might look cool, but it's as ignorant as a…

7 Classical mathematics in Architecture

Continuing my introduction to geometries and mathematics in architecture, I have made a short list of 7 classical uses of mathematics in design.

These are not comprehensive or detailed, but I used these as an introduction to parametric design to Architectural students when I was teaching.

The Golden Section

Fibonacci…

11 BASIC CLASSICAL GEOMETRIES IN ARCHITECTURE

In my ongoing attempt to collect some basic data for parametric architects to use, I wrote a short outline of basic geometries.

11 CLASSICAL ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRIES

The type and use of geometry in architecture is a fundamental element of the variation between styles or language of architecture. The type of geometry is often conflated with meaning. One concept is that architectural style-isms like art swing between periods of “romanticism” and “realism”. With “romantic” being…

What is Parametric Design in Architecture

I wrote a short post on my thoughts on what Parametric Design is within Architecture. With so many designers calling their blob or crumbled form "parametric" with no use of parametric methods, I argue that Parametric Design is not a style, it is a process. At least for now.

Parametric Urbanism: 15 Basic Parameters In Urban Design

This list is not comprehensive but a starting point for any planning project.

In a successfully designed urban plan the designer needs to manage and manipulate multiple interconnected parameters. Each parameter can be investigated and developed independently, but will also have to be…

Emergent Design: 8 Reasons Why Parametric Design is Changing Architecture

This is my short list of 8 reasons why parametric design is changing Architecture.

PARAMETRIC DESIGN

I first came across systemic and parametric design approaches while studying at the Architectural Association in London in the late 90s. Since then I have participated in and conducted research around digital and computational design. My Nordic roots drive me increasingly towards …

Future Looks Bright: The End of Modernism In Architecture

HOW THINGS BEGIN

We have been hearing of the end of modernism for a long time, why is it still here? Art movements are founded on a philosophy as well as being fixed in the era the movement operates in. It is always difficult to mark a specific start and end date for cultural and artistic eras. Movements feed off and feed into one another, and the shift to a new movement tends to be more gradual than we are led to believe.

The overarching movements prior to Modernism were…

First Elevation but need some Parametric Pattern on it?

Hey,

This is the first project that I'm doing as an architect for a client. It is a simple elevation facade for a compact duplex and 2 1bhk houses on the second floor. I wanted to make a geometric pattern on one of the walls to enhance the elevation.

I would be glad to share the sketchup model with you for you to play around with it and generate a pattern ideally on the first and second balcony walls.

I will be attaching an image of my elevation…

Creating second arch from tangent of first arch

Hi there,

Very new to grasshopper, and was wondering if I could get some help on lining up some arches.

I want a series of parabolic/catenary arches. The first arch is symmetrical and spans along a curve. I want the second arch to extend in the following directions:

From the tangent between the inner arch or,

Continuing to extend at the same angle of the right inner arch.

I have done some basic experimenting, however the arches that i…

open kitchen

There's a new movement for sharing food freely by recycling from the supermarkests. Well I thought it could be nice to create a small space for meals, so people could eat together.
