About

Ramboll Computational Design

As engineers our challenge is to work with other designers in a way that builds on a sound structural logic. At Ramboll we recognise that traditional design approaches are no longer enough if we want to continue to deliver engineering at the highest level. We realise that computation can act as a bridge between traditionally separate disciplines in design. In response to the growing computational demands of our projects, in 2011 we launched Ramboll Computational Design (RCD).

RCD is a team of dedicated specialists who use their skills in engineering, architecture, mathematics and computer science to tackle complex challenges in geometry and optimisation. Through research and projects we aim to apply the latest technology to practical situations. By engaging early with the design team we apply computational methods in an integrated way which aims to avoid post-rationalisation after the horse has bolted. Our goal is to deliver practical solutions to complex problems which are efficient and sustainable.

If you are interested to work for RCD or would like more info, please drop us an email at rcd@ramboll.co.uk.

Planar Remeshing

Introducing two components to generate a planar polygon tessellation of a freeform mesh:

  • Lloyd’s - Lloyd’s clustering algorithm: uses a Euclidean or normal based error metric to create a Voronoi diagram on any non-disjoint mesh. …

Ongreening Pavilion

This post describes the work of Ramboll Computational Design during the design and construction of the Ongreening Pavilion timber gridshell. The detailed design was a collaborative effort between Ongreening Ltd. and RCD.

The structural approach involved form-finding bending-active timber laths in Kangaroo, connected at…
