Making the basic curve really depends on the knot you want to create. This one was explicitly parameterized with trigonometric functions. Sometimes I just hand-draw them. 

I have 3D-printed the above knot. It's beautiful! I've even tested out our experimental clay printer on it.

That's an interesting idea for sure. But I like to make GH layouts that are independent of Rhino, so can you provide some guidance on how to make a curve like that in GH?

I don't know if it would be possible to use a 3D printer to make a part like that, but it would be interesting to see if it can be done.
