Lloyd's algorithm was used making voronoi look very much like hexagons.later links are breaking to adapt closest cells but with one local condition for all cells.

Daniel,havn't thought of Hexagons.will give a try to this process .

You start with a hexagonal grid, right? Could you do it over a truncated octahedron grid? It would be interesting to see this result in 3d.
