Hey Jonathan, did you manage to get it work?

Comment by Jonathan Paljor on March 26, 2016 at 5:37pm

Hey Marios, I've been trying to do something similar but have not been able to assign the varying mesh radii into the ExoWireframe component. Im still not very good at GH so I apologize for any stupid mistakes. Your help would be greatly apreciated!

@Nick. No, the donate button is still there, somewhere in the page where I share stuff , mainly due to lazyness reasons.

I don't usually bother checking the profile. I think "interesting" is more of the bait for me to answer a question these days.

Marios, i am glad that it is not only me that finds himself having gh refreshment breaks from 'real work'.

I am amazed at those figures you have quoted. Have you since removed the donate button? I have visited your website several times over the years and i don't think i ever noticed it. But maybe thats part of the problem, selective internet vision.

In terms of who to help I generally check the profile page of the question asker. The quickest barometer of whether somebody is a chronic freeloader is if the only discussions they partake in on the forums are

a) their own discussions

b) posts entitled 'help me!', 'urgent', 'voronoi'

@ Danny: You are absolutely right about this category of people that never reply ( I will consider a special mention -edit in my blog post).

I take it as the only possible reply in this is case is to say thank you. So that's why I categorize it in the general group of rude /non-appreciating people.

Free loaders are only. harming themselves, because afterwards and while in the professional /corporate context they  will get into difficult situations where skills are indeed needed. And there unfortunately -fortunately you can’t cheat.

I constantly find myself skipping something important at work to answer something on the forum. Because this refreshes my mind. Don’t get me wrong, I am quite happy with what I am doing, and it mainly involves GH, but I find fascinating the fact that so many problems are out there, waiting to be solved.

You could say I am a ghunky as well.

@ David: Exactly, as per point 6  ALWAYS help with something that you are interested into, or seems intriguing. Whatever the attitude, I will help as long as I find the problem interesting.

Again, being and feeling part of a community, means that you follow certain “unwritten” rules as well. I haven’t got an OCD with giving credit, but I feel that referencing is crucial  for someone to be part of these communities.

Thanks, the new exoskeleton did all the hard work. I will post the example soon.

Btw.

If someone is intrested in reading the post you can take a look here

Best,

M.

I tend to follow the "rules" outlined by Marios in his excellent blog post...although I must admit that I will sometimes ignore the rudeness of the poster if the problem is some combination of being either interesting to me personally, or in my estimation of general use for the community at large.

It bums me out when people don't give credit, and Marios made the excellent point that referencing gives you credibility not only as an academic but also as a participant in a community. It's a self-defeating form of selfishness/vanity that seeks to conceal origins or motivations that are derived from others' work: if such connections are revealed, the person is automatically (and correctly) villified.

But more importantly...awesome example! :)

Hi Marios (and Ángel)

I pretty much live by your sentiments on the forum here. #3 is an interesting point.

But I feel there is one category you have missed. The people that never reply to your response, even though they have been on the forum and posted another question. I openly acknowledge the limitations of Ning Threads and there is a possibility to miss replies but when you are the only one...

Another one that eats away at you is the Asked and Answered then Asked Anew to try and trigger an unsuspecting response from someone else.

Whenever I meet forum members in person they are always surprised to learn I don't work for McNeel and the very next question is always "Why do you help then?"

The answer is simply I, and I alone, learnt through doing, which when you boil down to it is a very selfish act. Why do a still do it?

I cannot post any examples of work because none of it is in the public domain. So in order to give back what I have received, I still help. Plus more importantly I still have things to learn.

When we first started 6 years ago. I think there was a bit more free love feel about the GH forum (or Google Group) and Free loaders were harder to spot as there was a lack of the "Wise".  Should the people that join today not get to feel that love because of those of us who have been burnt? I think this would detract from what it is about the Gh Forum that makes it so great. And the Free Loaders are still none the wiser. I personally find it very hard to follow someone else's definition (train of thought). So how do people with next to no knowledge of the inner workings of GH do it?

I took nearly 6 months out of the forum, primarily because of life getting in the way, but also as an experiment. Do you know what I learnt? Nothing. And there you have it The forum can do without me but I cannot do without the forum.

My name is Danny Boyes and I am a ghunky.

@Angel: Thanks. It was just an honest recording of thoughts on paper (or bits), not predesigned or anything. And again this is just my personal opinion, many may perceive differently this matter.

I will defintely look into openGH, looks very promising and hopefully find a good idea to contribute with.

Offtopic: loving your last article about sharing :) I started a project some time ago with Luis Fraguada, called openGH...if you want we could talk about it deeply.
