algorithmic modeling for Rhino

...would we need to worry so much about getting geometry out of Rhino and into other software like Revit or ArchiCad in this BIM era ?

Thanks to GrassHopper, Rhino has reached an elegant balance between a fully parametric (and psycho-rigid) software like SolidWorks, and a standard modeler.

One could even argue that Rhino has become a slightly out-dated geometry display plug-in for Grasshopper.

But if industry-standard documentation tools don't make their appearance in Rhino V6, along with decent block management, I don't see a bright future for Rhino in the construction industry.

Flinging data back and forth from software to software is only fun on the first day, and when the big players will have integrated proper free-form modeling in their BIM-enabled packages, what will be the point in sticking with the RhinoSaurus ?

Hello Giulio,

Interactive and reliable 2D projections and sections from a 3D models has been a standard feature in all the parametric CADs that I can think of for over 15 years, and it has become commonplace in AEC software.

Rhino's "Make 2d" feature is neither interactive nor reliable, and I suppose that you know this is a long-time subject of discontent.

You could also add :

-Ability to export a vector format from the said 2D view

-Automatic hatching which will adapt to the view's scale, the material of the cut objects

-Dimensions in 2D views which update when the 3D model is modified

-Choice of drawing standard (ISO , ANSI, DIN,...)

I know that Make2D was improved in the Rhino WIP.
Some of the mentioned abilities in the list are available in VisualARQ, have you already tried that plug-in?

Merely improving Make 2D will probably make it faster and more reliable, but I doubt it will ever make it interactive.

I have tested VisualArq, and I like this tool.

VisualArk attempts to leverage Rhino's display styles and clipping to produce views that look like architectural documentation, adding hatching and annotation features but it is plagued by Rhino's poor graphic performances with large models, and display bugs.

It proved to be of no practical use to document our buildings because of this.

Moreover, since this is merely display style hack, views can not be exported eventually to a vector exchange format like Dwg which is still (sadly) an industry standard.
