Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Hi,

How can I go thorugh form finding and optimization of "Grid shells" using ssi for SAP2000?? Does anyone know about that?

Moreover, where can I find tutorials and example files for using ssiSAP, ssiSAPsover and StructDrawRhino?

Any help would be appreciated

Hi,

I'm busy coding the controls to permit non linear solving in SAP at the moment if you are targeting overall gridshell form.  I'll test it and hope to post in the next day or so.

Unfortunately I haven't posted so many examples to the blog specifically for SAP, and I'll do my best to improve this quite quickly.  Most features demonstrated with GSA (or the other solvers) should be possible with SAP.  If you see any examples you'd like to apply, then please let me know (I have quite a few SAP specific files not posted yet, or will quickly try to generate it and any features required).

http://geometrygym.blogspot.com/search/label/SAP2000 only shows a couple of posts with SAP files, I've attached the Galapagos Truss example model to this post.

I'm more than happy to assist with any questions and applying the tools to the specifics of your models.

Cheers,

Jon

thanks Joe a lot for your reply.

Actually I am going to use my own optimization algorithm, but first I need to know how can I use ssiSAP2000 for the form finding process of Gridshell? Could you please give me some recommendations please?

Mahsa

Hi Mahsa,

I added capability to nominate non linear analysis, but my efforts to replicate the grid shell form finding have failed so far.  I'll keep trying.  Email me if you want to look at where I got to.

Jon

Hi Jon,

I am following your 3 pin truss video on translating Grasshopper to SAP2000, but I am having some difficulties.  Rhino keeps crashing when I try to send the model to SAP (0:53 of the youtube video).  I created a blank SAP file to send it to, but SAP never opens up either.  I'm using version 14 of SAP2000. Your advice on the matter would be great.

Thanks!

Amos

Hi Amos,

Are you using v14.2 of SAP or newer?  The crash suggests not.  I try to support as early a version as possible, but there were feature improvements in that version that I'm using.

Cheers,

Jon

Hi Jon,

I'm using SAP2000 v14.2.4 and an evaluation version of Rhino 4.  Could the evaluation version of Rhino be the cause?

Thanks,

Amos
