Grasshopper

algorithmic modeling for Rhino

Can someone please explain why Grasshopper has to play one of the windows sounds every time I manually enter a value in a number slider or digit scroller and press Enter?

There are no separate entries for Rhino/GH in the Windows sounds settings.

Of course disabling the "default beep" would be one solution, but it would be the wrong one. There is no reason for it to play the sound without being able to turn it off just for GH. What is the purpose of the sound anyways? It is usually to alert me to something I might miss otherwise. When manually entering a value and pressing Enter I dont need a sound for that, because I am actively doing that.

Any solutions to disabling windows sounds JUST for Rhino/GH? This is happening on Windows 7, have not tried on other versions.

I don't play any sounds. That's all default winforms behaviour. Somehow Windows feels that you pressing enter there is worthy of a ping. That's why one of the first things I do on any new computer is disable all sounds.

I honestly didn't think you were. I know the sounds could also be disabled globally, but I think they do serve a purpose of an alert - just in this case its a useless one.

Could you take over the sound control and disable it? Like ArchiCAD has its own section in "Sounds" in the Control Panel. I think they are basically doing exactly that; playing no sound for any alert and then just some specific ones:

Ultimately its one more reason to look forward to GH2 on the Mac ;)

yes its like windows alerts you via sound that you bypassed the green tick with enter key.  i get this sound when for example a save dialog is open waiting for a file name to save and i click inside the program window.

Oh Windows.. it just assumes too much :D

Who clicks the green tick when entering a value with the keyboard? If I click away it could maybe make sound to let me know the value I entered was cancelled, but even that wouldn't be worthy of an alert, but would be more understandable. Clicking the green tick does exactly the same as pressing Enter, so should be equally unworthy of playing a sound.

I think the ArchiCAD way is the only solution other than disabling all sounds, which wouldn't be right.
