SubSrf index number

SubSrf is useful but the output only gives the list of sub surfaces, not the index number of each sub surface. Is there a way I can retrieve the index number?

I am trying to make a diagrid, and want to have the odd-number sub surfaces connect the diagonal in one direction and the even numbers in the other direction.
